The I-94 is one of your most important immigration documents. You will receive one from Customs & Border Protection (CBP) every time you enter the U.S., or from USCIS if you are approved for a change of status or an extension of stay while in the country.
The I-94 shows your immigration status and how long you are permitted to stay in the United States. For F and J visa holders, the Admit Until Date should be listed as D/S, for duration of status.
After each entry to the U.S., visit the CBP website to download a copy of your updated I-94 record. Review each I-94 carefully for accuracy. The online I-94 record is replaced with each entry, and it is impossible to retrieve previous versions, so keeping a copy of each I-94 in your records is very important.
If you are unable to access your I-94 after entering the U.S., or if it contains errors, please see your options below. Once you have your corrected I-94 record, make sure to submit a copy to OISS.
- Contact OISS
-
If your I-94 record is incorrect or if you are unable to access it online, please notify OISS immediately. In cases where the I-94 is not available, we may be able to help access the information through common troubleshooting steps.
- Check your Port of Entry for Specific I-94 Correction Options
-
Individuals with issues with their I-94 records typically need to contact Deferred Inspection. Some U.S. Ports of Entry have Deferred Inspection sites that accept I-94 correction requests by email.
If you entered the U.S. through a Houston airport, an email correction is not available. However, if you came through a different Port of Entry, please review the list of Deferred Inspection Sites to see whether your entry location offers this option. - Submit Online Correction Request to CBP
-
If your Port of Entry does not have a dedicated email address for resolving I-94 issues and your I-94 correction request is not urgent (OISS can help determine when this is the case), you may be able to submit a general request online at https://help.cbp.gov/s/questions.
Describe the issue, and make sure to provide information about the flight you entered on, or other specifics of your travel to the United States. It is recommended that you upload a copy of your passport and/or visa. - Visit the Houston Deferred Inspection Office In Person
-
If you need to resolve the issue more quickly, you can visit the Houston Office of Deferred Inspection in person. Unfortunately, their available hours are very limited, and they are located quite far from campus, but if you are able to go in person, you can typically get the issue resolved on the spot. Make sure to bring all of your immigration documents and travel information with you!
