Free English and Culture Classes
We invite you to join our free English and Culture classes!
Please note that these classes are offered to you by volunteers who enjoy meeting and helping Rice internationals, and receive no compensation except the enjoyment of meeting and working with you. Even if you feel confident in your English language skills, we encourage you to join us for a fun opportunity to make friends and find out more about American culture. These classes are available to Rice students, scholars, and their dependents.
Click here for this semester's schedule! The classes offered include Beginning English Conversation, Advanced/Intermediate Conversation, and English Idioms & Slang.
Click here to sign up! Please note that the link will be activated on Tuesday, January 17th, at 10:00 a.m.
- Advanced/Intermediate English Conversation will be offered at two different times, and you may only choose one. This class will have limited attendance, so please sign up only if you know you will be able to attend. Here's a brief description of the class: The students read aloud and discuss op-ed articles including new vocabulary. The teacher will also bring up cultural opportunities in and around Houston.
- If you do not see a class on the list, it means that the class has reached maximum attendance and has been removed as an option.
- If you see an exit page with "Thank you for signing up for the Volunteer Culture & Conversation Classes!" you have successfully signed up. You will also receive an email confirmation with your sign-up information.
- Please note that you must be a current Rice student or scholar, or a spouse of a current Rice student or scholar to be eligible to join these classes.
For more formal English classes, you may contact Rice's ESL (English as a Second Language) Program. This program is not free, but is an excellent program for all different levels of English speaking abilities.
