TMC International Academic Navigator

The TMC International Academic Navigator process is intended to guide both Rice international students going to the Texas Medical Center (TMC) institutions for a course, observation, or employment or TMC students coming to Rice for the same purposes. Please review the categories below to see which one fits your situation.

 Inter-institutional students) 
Visit the Office of the Registrar's website for directions on how to enroll as an inter-institutional student. The Registrar will work with OISS to verify immigration status.  
Observerships/Externships
(TMC students considered Visiting Scholars at Rice; only for "hands-off" learning - "hands-on" learning requires employment authorization)
Invitation letter from Rice Academic Department
required. Hiring academic department will schedule a Fast-Pass expedited check-in with OISS in which the scholar will fill out an OISS observership form. Individual will need to bring to OISS all immigration documents (i.e. passport, I-20, DS-2019, I-94)
Internships/Research/
(TMC students considered
Visiting Scholars) 
Invitation letter from Rice Academic Department
required. Hiring academic department will need to
provide OISS with 1) an offer letter and 2) a PAF prior to the position start date. Hiring academic department will schedule check-in with OISS. Individual will need to bring all immigration
documents (i.e. passport, I-20, DS-2019, I-94).
Check-ins are offered daily.  Scholar must also go to Human Resources (HR) to fill out employment paperwork. 

Rice student going to TMC institution 
In addition to following the Rice requirements below, students should visit TMC's International Academic Navigator (link coming soon!) to learn the details required at the institution where they will be going.

  Undergraduate Students Graduate Students
Coursework Concurrent Enrollment form would be needed if a) other institution requires form or b) student needs to use TMC course to meet the full-time credit requirement (12 credit hours  1) Inter-Institutional Form.  
2) Concurrent Enrollment form would be needed if a) other institution requires form or b) student needs to use TMC course to meet the full-time credit requirement (9 credit hours)
Observerships/
Externships
Observership Process: Student enrolls in NSCI 399, fills out OISS observership form, and meets requirements to be at Methodist. Externships: Student is approved through CCD and OISS.      See below
Internships/
Research
Employment authorization required whether paid or unpaid.  Employment authorization required whether paid or unpaid.
